hylenex recombinant (hyaluronidase human injection) is the first and only human recombinant hyaluronidase approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for subcutaneous fluid administration.
hylenex recombinant facilitated subcutaneous rehydration represents an alternative to IV administration of fluids.
hylenex recombinant allows fluids to be administered under the skin rather than through a vein, especially when fluid replacement is all that a child needs. Special care must be taken in pediatric patients to avoid over hydration by controlling the rate and total volume of the infusion.1
The safety and efficacy of hylenex recombinant has been demonstrated through clinical trials in healthy adults and pediatric patients. While hylenex recombinant has already been FDA-approved to facilitate subcutaneous fluid administration, clinical research continues to further demonstrate its safety and efficacy, with recent work concentrating on pediatric rehydration. An initial study of the use of hylenex recombinant for pediatric hydration already is complete and data have been accepted for publication. This research shows that hylenex recombinant facilitated subcutaneous rehydration in children with mild to moderate dehydration appears to be safe and effective and well accepted by clinicians and parents.2
